SBU Evidence map

systematically evaluates the quality of systematic reviews in a particular field for the purpose of identifying reliable evidence and gaps in scientific knowledge. SBU Evidence Maps are generated with the help of experts in the field. Prior to publication, maps are examined by independent experts, as well as our quality and priority group and SBU’s Scientific Advisory Committees.

Aim

The aim of this report is to assess all systematic reviews that have evaluated methods used for preventing, diagnosing, or treating various conditions in the field of dentistry. The systematic reviews are mapped to the following dental areas: Endodontology, Dental implantology, Cariology, Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Prosthodontics, Orofacial medicine, Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function/ Clinical oral physiology, Orthodontics, Periodontology and Pediatric dentistry.

Method

Inclusion criteria:

Population: No limitation

Intervention/Index test: Methods used for the purpose of preventing, diagnosing, or treating various conditions in the field of dentistry

Control/Reference test: No limitations

Outcome: Any that measures the effects of an intervention or the accuracy of an index test

Study design: Systematic reviews

Language: English

Search period: From 2000 to 2019. Final search February 2019.

Databases searched: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase and PubMed

The PICO/PIRO for this map, as well as the categories used to classify the content in the map, were outlined by the project group. A systematic literature search was thereafter designed and performed by an information specialist in order to identify all published systematic reviews potentially relevant for the PICO/PIRO. After the literature search was performed, two reviewers independently screened the abstracts and full texts and selected the relevant systematic reviews. Risk of bias in the included systematic reviews were assessed independently by two reviewers using a modified version of the AMSTAR tool. Any disagreement regarding relevance or risk of bias was solved by a discussion.

Based on the research questions in the relevant the systematic reviews, they were mapped to

  • one or several of the following clinical strategies; prevention, diagnosis or treatment, and
  • one or several of the following dental areas: Endodontology, Dental implantology, Cariology, Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Prosthodontics, Orofacial medicine, Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function/ Clinical oral physiology, Orthodontics, Periodontology and Pediatric dentistry.

In addition to the map that covers the dental field as a whole, a map for each dental area, which included systematic reviews of low or moderate risk of bias, was also formed.

The report was reviewed by SBU’s internal quality assurance group, SBU´s scientific advisory board and external reviewers,

Results

Altogether, 2918 relevant systematic reviews were identified, out of which approximately 1300 hold a low or moderate risk of bias. In the interactive maps, relevant systematic reviews within a specific area can easily be identified and accessed through the connecting links.

Conflicts of Interest

In accordance with SBU’s requirements, the experts and scientific reviewers participating in this project have submitted statements on their potential conflicts of interest. These documents are available at SBU’s secretariat. SBU has determined that the conditions described in the submissions are compatible with SBU’s requirements for objectivity and impartiality.
